Zlapped: Welcome guys to Ask Zlapped, where I’ll be answering your questions 5 days a week.
Zlapped: Hi guys, welcome to episode 16. Today’s question is from Tom.
Tom: Hey Zlapped, love watching you. Quick question – on the original cast upon direct port from DotA, one of the heroes that didn’t make it was Techies. Would you be interested in seeing a direct port of Techies in Heroes of Newerth? Bells and all? Or do you think it wouldn’t be very viable with the current line of heroes?
And, my second question, related to the first question, did you like Techies, assuming you’ve ever played DotA. I’m assuming you have, not DotA 2 but DotA 1. What do you think of the hero? Yeah, that’s it.
Zlapped: Thank you very much for your question, Tom. Actually, I have not played DotA 1 or any other MOBA before HoN, so I wasn’t actually into any of the previous games. I was, as a matter of fact, playing Counterstrike 1.6 in World of Warcraft before HoN and I only came over to HoN because the website I was playing counterstrike on semi-professionally (or trying to, anyway) gave away beta invites for free. So I was like, “I’ll try it out”.
So, I actually haven’t played DotA 1, so I didn’t actually get into DotA and the heroes they have until DotA 2 came out, because then I was forced to know actually where the game came from. So, ultimately, I’m not that…I don’t have that much information on DotA 2 or Techies in general. I don’t know too much about the game.
But, I do remember watching a tournament where, back in the days before Techies got nursed, where he was solo carrying games because it was killing people all over the map all the time. And it was kind of ridiculous, it was like a completely broken Engineer. But, I’ve only ever seen one tournament where Techies has been in, and I don’t watch DotA, and I don’t watch DotA streams besides the international – that’s the one tournament every year that I watch, because I have friends playing there.
So, I guess I can’t really answer your question. But, what I can tell you is no, I do not want a hero like that in HoN. We have Engineer and the mines are a really fun spell, but it’s just mines counterable by rewards and it’s not that broken in Engineer, while, from what I have seen from Techies (at least previously, anyway – I don’t know how Techies is now) is it’s not something I would want in the game, no.
But I do think that it’s cool to have heroes that are very one of a kind and very interesting and very what the hell is this? to add some fun to the game and some more interesting factors in place that normally wouldn’t happen.
Like, for example, Bubbles is one of the most standard heroes and has been for a very long time, but you can make so many amazing plays just by using Take Cover, Portal Key, and Tablet, and having heroes like that, that just makes amazing plays and fun plays with a lot of skill is very fun. But Techies as itself, I don’t think that I would want that in the game, no. I made sure to read up on the spells just before I answered this question, and from what I’m reading, no. (laughs) Thank you for your question, though.
